Our High School Marching Band has a performance in Owosso today and the student's report time is 5:30 p.m.  As a result, I will be holding my conferences until 5:00 p.m. tonight at the middle school.  I will be holding conferences from 4-7 at the high school on Tuesday.  If you are unable to see me on Monday and Tuesday does not work for your schedule, please feel free to give me a call or send me an e-mail if you would like to talk.

Dear Perry Band Students and Parents,

Tired of the same old thing at dinner?  We’ll add some fun back into your meal routine.  Starting today we will be offering a new fundraiser, the Fun Pasta Fundraiser.  Fun Pasta comes in all different shapes, sizes, and colors.  There’s something for everyone.  We have zoo animals, princesses, prates, dinosaurs, horses, music, cats, dogs, sports, collegiate, and more.

Profits support the band program in such areas as uniforms, new music at all grade levels, year-end awards, new music stands, and the updating of school-owned instruments.

Although all fundraisers are voluntary, we would like to encourage your participation in making this a Big Success!  As an incentive for the kids, we will have a money box draw.  For every five (5) items sold, kids will get a draw from the money box.

Prices are listed on the order form.  Orders and money will be turned in on Wednesday, October 19th.  Checks can be made payable to Perry Bands.  The Delivery/Pick-Up Date is Thursday, November 17th and will take place in the High School Cafeteria, from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.  If this is not possible for you, please notate this on your order form.  We will contact you to make other arrangements.  Please remember to put your name, grade, and phone number on your order form.  Remember-this is a Pre-Paid Fundraiser.  All money must be turned in at the time the order is turned in.  Thank you so much for your continued support!

I would like to encourage your children to participate in this year's Solo and Ensemble Festival.  It can be a very rewarding experience.  It can also push your children's musicianship.  I have provided the address to the three documents you will need to register your child and be informed on all of the details of this wonderful event.  You can also find these documents on our important documents page.  Please consider "nudging" your child to take part.  If you have any questions, please e-mail me at your convenience.

The annual Perry Fest parade will take place this Saturday, September 17, starting at noon. High School Band members should report to the band room at11:00am. Plan to be finished around 1:00pm. Band members will have bus transportation provided from the end of the parade route (Perry Automotive Parts store) back to the high school. This is a required performance for all High School Band members.

Perry Middle School 8th-Grade band member Chloe Browne, a talented young flute-player, spent August 10 - August 21, 2016 at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp where she took part in twelve days of intensive rehearsals and challenging technique classes. Chloe minored in “World Music” with lessons on various styles of music found throughout the world including non-Western classical, folk, and tribal music.

Chloe made many new friends, and adds that “they were really nice and we related on a lot of things, like music and art, because that's what we are all here for.” She had a great experience and would love to return to Blue Lake and attend again in the future. 

Chloe expressed appreciation for the scholarship assistance from Perry Band Boosters to help with the cost of tuition.

This year marks Blue Lake Fine Art Camp’s 50th anniversary season.

Perry Band & Choir Boosters have an opportunity to raise up to $8,000 by partnering with Signature Ford to host a DRIVE 4UR SCHOOL event on Friday, September 9, at Perry High School. For each participant who test drives a Ford vehicle (many to choose from) along with a 2017 Ford Escape, Ford Motor Company/Signature Ford will donate $30 to our band and choir programs. There's nothing to buy - this is not a sales event.

Drivers must be 18 years of age or older, with a valid driver's license, limit of one participant per household.

Please spread the word!

Also, we will need volunteers to help at the event, please check out our online sign-up sheet through the link below for volunteer opportunities. Thank you!

Only two weeks until band camp - do you have everything you need?

  • Flutes: flutist friend
  • Clarinets: 4 good reeds, lyre, and flip folder
  • Saxophones: 4 good reeds, lyre, and flip folder
  • Trumpets: valve oil, slide grease, lyre, flip folder (or a clip on flip folder can be used which takes the place of both the lyre and flip folder)
  • Mellophones (French Horns): valve oil, slide grease, lyre, flip folder
  • Trombones: super slick slide cream, slide grease, lyre, flip folder (or a clip on flip folder can be used which takes the place of both the lyre and flip folder)
  • Baritones: valve oil, slide grease, lyre, flip folder
  • Tubas: valve oil, slide grease, flip folder
  • Percussion: flip folder
  • Colorguard: a small spiral bound note book

All of these supplies can be easily obtained at Marshall Music Co. in the Frandor Shopping Center.

Ross Kelly, a 2016 Perry High School graduate and newly announced member of the Spartan Marching Band Drumline, is this year’s recipient of the prestigious John Philip Sousa Award. The award was presented at the annual band banquet by Director of Bands, Garret Ernst. 

The John Philip Sousa Award is the pinnacle of achievement for high school band students. Created in 1955, the award honors the top student in a high school band and recognizes superior musicianship, dependability, loyalty, and outstanding dedication. It was developed with the support of Helen Sousa Albert and Priscilla Sousa, daughters of the famous composer and bandmaster. The selection of Mr. Kelly for this award was based largely on the fact that he has been an exceptional member of the band who has demonstrated leadership qualities and is looking forward to continuing his musical interests beyond the high school level.

Ross began his musical studies in elementary school as a fifth-grade percussionist under Mr. Ernst’s instruction. Additionally, he has taken lessons at Michigan State University from members of the Spartan Drumline since his freshman year of high school, along with attending summer camp and help sessions hosted by the university. His many activities and accomplishments as a Perry Band student include marching band, concert band, pep band, jazz band, winter drumline, acting as percussion section leader, volunteering at many band events, performing as a guest accompanist with the PHS Chorale, and multiple performances at the MSBOA District V Solo & Ensemble Festival, where he has received 1st-Division ratings at both the District and State levels for his snare drum solos. He also tutored younger students and participated in Seminar in Instrumental Music Education which allowed him to work in an instructional capacity with the middle school bands and their percussion students as part of his daily school schedule his senior year. He created and led the middle school bass drumline, coaching them to perform a unique piece which was performed at the recent spring concert.

Ross will attend Michigan State University in the fall, where he plans to major in mechanical engineering. He has earned a snare position in the renowned Spartan Marching Band Drumline.

Ross is the son of Jack and Julie Kelly and has an older brother, Vince.

June 7th, 2016

Attention all Perry Band Members and Parents,

Marshall Music will be at the Perry Middle School on Wednesday, June 29th to go through all of the school owned instruments.  On Thursday, June 30th, from 10:00 a.m.- 2:00p.m., I will be at the Perry Middle School to check out instruments for students.  Please note, that I will need to collect the $20 instrument fee at the time the instrument is checked out.  Checks can be made payable to Perry Bands.  Checking out the instrument at this time will take care of the upcoming school year (2016-2017) as well as the summer.  This does not pertain to any band member who is currently renting from Marshall Music or owns their instrument outright.

Friday, June 10th, is the annual middle school band trip to Cedar Point! Students are to report to the high school band room at 6:30am for a short meeting before boarding the bus which will leave promptly at 7:00am. Remember to bring money for food and souvenirs. The bus is expected to return around 11:00pm, students will be encouraged to notify parents with an exact time on the way home. Forecast for Sandusky, OH on Friday is cloudy with a high of 77 degrees. Sounds perfect!

A huge congratulations goes out to Ross Kelly.  Ross was a senior this year at Perry Public Schools and has had a life-long dream of being a member of the Michigan State University Spartan Marching Band Drum-line.  We could not be more proud of this young man as he moves on to the next chapter of his life.  Personally, I have enjoyed every moment working with this young man each an every year he has been a member of our band program.  We wish him all the best on his studies at MSU and hope that he finds the Spartan Percussion Section everything he has dreamed of.  Ross, we are so proud of you!
